An Olympic relay baton containing good luck messages from sick children across the country is to stop off in Braintree today.

The baton contains messages from all 33 children's hospices in Britain and is due to be greeted by Jackie Pell, chairman of the district council, at Braintree Town Hall en route to the Ipswich Children's Hospice.

It will be delivered by Robin Sharp, East Anglia's Children's Hospices (Each) community fundraiser.

Each operates the Ipswich Children's Hospice, Milton in Cambridge and Quidenham in Norfolk.

The baton on its penultimate leg before reaching Southend tomorrow, when former British athlete David Bedford will take it 2,400 miles to the British Olympic team in Athens.

Tracy Rennie, Each's head of care, said: "The children at all three of our hospices in East Anglia are very excited to know that their messages will be read by the British team and will help spur on the athletes to gold in Greece"
