Police are refusing to release details of an incident in which it is believed a family were subjected to a terrifying ordeal at the hands of masked intruders.
It is thought the family, from Lodge Road, Hazeleigh, near Maldon, were targeted by thieves who entered their home, tied up the couple and their child before killing their pet dog.
It is also rumoured the family have now been moved to a safe house.
However, police have refused to confirm or deny the reports or release further details of the incident other than to say: "We were called to an address in Lodge Road, Hazeleigh, at about 6.50am last Wednesday.
"A wallet and watch had been stolen while the occupants were in the house.
"We do not believe that this is a matter for the community as a whole to be concerned about. We cannot comment any further for operational reasons."
