About 800 people are fighting proposals to relocate it to Clacton and ward councillor Roy Smith yesterday handed a petition and 50 individual letters to Bonnie Hart, portfolio holder responsible for libraries at County Hall.

Tendring district and Essex county councillor Mr Smith said that feeling was running very high over the issue.

"The building at Golf Green Road is in the very heart of the community and people living down here do not have the transport to get to Clacton," he said.

"I have not heard one person speak in favour of putting the facility up to three miles away and it will be the loss of a village amenity."

Essex County Council wants to relocate the library to Bishops Park College in Jaywick Lane, Clacton, from next spring.
