Fifty-three years later and the pair are happily married and celebrating their golden wedding.
Mr O'Sullivan, 74, of Elderberry Close, Langdon Hills, said: "It was love at first sight.
"We have been very happily married all that time.
"We have had our ups and downs, everyone does, but the majority has been very happy."
The couple have one son and have lived in the area for the last 60 years after meeting in Leytonstone.
They celebrated their special date with a meal on Saturday with friends and family.
Mrs O'Sullivan turned 70 in July.
