A teenager who turned on a sleeping friend by smashing a champagne bottle over his head later admitted he might have killed him if he had had a gun.

When student Kevin King woke up he was in agony and covered in blood.

His attacker, 19-year-old Lazer Voka, disappeared from the house they shared in Pembury Road, Westcliff.

Voka eventually turned up at another pal's home wearing only boxer shorts, proclaiming: "I've got the devil in my head."

He was later arrested and pleaded guilty at Basildon Crown Court to unlawful wounding with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. Albanian-born Voka was ordered to be detained indefinitely at a secure unit in Runwell Hospital, Wickford.

The court was told Voka had been friends with Mr King, a student at South East Essex College in Southend.

Mr King had been celebrating with drinks last Christmas and went to his room to catch up on sleep. Voka crept into the room and hit him with the bottle.
