Residents say they are outraged about squatters living in a mid Essex cemetery.
Bryan Clark, spokesman for a group of concerned Marlborough Road residents, said there are currently two young people living in Chelmsford Cemetery, London Road, in a tent.
He said: "It is sacrilegious. There are laws governing churchyards and cemeteries, you simply cannot decide to live there."
PC Alison Cotter, of the Moulsham Community Policing Team, visited the site yesterday afternoon, having only been made aware of the situation that day.
She said: "Essex Police are working with Chelmsford Borough Council to take official action as soon as possible."
"The persons staying in the tent will be served a notice requiring them to leave the site, and under no circumstances will they be able to return."
A spokeswoman for Chelmsford Council said: "A Chelmsford Borough Council housing officer and a member of staff from the cemetery will be visiting the site as soon as possible to discuss the options available and to try to resolve the situation."
