A man has hit out at thieves who stole his wife's motorised wheelchair.

Peter and Diane Dewing, of Godric Place, Braintree, were shocked to discover the £1,000 wheelchair had been taken from outside their secure flat.

The black WM wheelchair, with a Velcro seat and chrome wheel trims, was left outside the ground floor flat of the secure complex to save space in their home.

Thieves managed to enter the premises between 8.30pm on Thursday and 10.40am the following day, when the couple realised it had been taken.

Mrs Dewing, 59, uses the chair because she suffers from severe pain due to rheumatoid arthritis, and can only walk around for short distances.

Her 61-year-old husband, who is her full time carer, has been forced to push her in an NHS wheelchair, but he explained this is very difficult because he suffers from emphysema, which leaves him short of breath.

He said: "How low can you get? I think it is utterly despicable to steal from a disabled person. It's the lowest of the low."

The serial number of the wheelchair is 2262 and the chassis number is AA205562.

Anyone with information on the theft is asked to contact Braintree police on 01376 551312, or Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
