Mystery today surrounded the future of Colchester United legend Micky Cook.

The Director of Youth Football was not at his post again this morning, while rumour and counter rumour were red-hot on the U's official website message board that he has been axed.

Cook was unavailable for comment, but he has not been seen on the training ground for up to a week.

And the silence coming out of Layer Road, plus the lack of an immediate denial of the rumours, could mean his many fans should ready themselves for a shock.

The Evening Gazette's phone calls to U's chief executive Marie Partner and the club's media manager, Matt Hudson, have remained unanswered and they have also failed to respond to our messages left on their answerphones requesting clarification of Cook's role.

If 53-year-old former club captain Cook, who holds the record for more than 700 League and cup appearances for the U's, has been made redundant it will end a love affair with Layer Road lasting almost 30 years.

A tough-tackling terrier-like full-back, he was one of the first youngsters brought into the club at the tender age of 16-years-old by his former Leyton Orient boss Dick Graham.
