Southend United manager Steve Tilson is close to completing the free transfer signing of centre back Spencer Prior.

The experienced 32-year-old did not figure in last night's 1-1 draw at Billericay Town but should soon be re-joining the Shrimpers after being released by the Championship's Cardiff City at the end of last season.

"I don't want to say too much on the matter at the moment but I'm around 80 per cent certain Spencer will be signing for us," said the Blues boss.

"I've held further talks with him but there are still one or two things that need to be sorted out before he joins.

"I'm quite confident he will and it really would be a great signing for us. I don't want to get too carried away in case he doesn't come, but he's experienced and he's great in the air.

"That will come in handy as there will not be too many teams in our league this season who will pass it around. They like to get it forwards early and his presence in the defence would be beneficial for us."
