Southend Hospital has been given the go-ahead to bid for flagship foundation trust status to give staff the freedom to improve services.
Health Secretary John Reid yesterday gave the green light for the hospital to apply for the status which allows patients to have a huge say in hospital priorities.
The hospital will also be freed from spending restrictions set by Whitehall.
Basildon Hospital is already a Foundation Trust.
