A restaurant owner has vowed to overturn an order by Braintree council to chop down his brightly-coloured palm trees which stand proudly outside his premises.

King Yik has lodged an appeal against the council's recent decision to order him to fell the decor outside the Palm Trees Oriental Restaurant in Blake End, Dunmow Road.

A planning application to approve the five different coloured artificial trees, which are illuminated at night, did not even make it to area committee.

Planning Officers were able to use their delegated authority because they said the application was contrary to its planning policy and the only representations received from the public within the required period were objections.

But Mr Yik said he has received masses of support for the eye-catching additions including an Evening Gazette poll which voted in favour of the trees.

A date for the appeal hearing is due to be set.
