Southend Hospital is set for a £100m redevelopment as part of a blueprint to boost health services across the borough, it was announced today.
Health Secretary Dr John Reid named the hospital as one of 15 projects to benefit from a £4billion investment programme.
The hospital site in Prittlewell Chase will be transformed to include:
More intensive care and high dependency beds
Additional and replacement specialist scanners including MRI, CT and specialist cancer scanners
Refurbishment of the outpatients' department and Prittlewell wing, the oldest part of the hospital, dating back to the 1930s
A new ward block at the back of the hospital to relocate the Nightingale wards with better standards of privacy and dignity and capacity to provide separate wards, rooms, including single rooms with en-suites, and bathrooms for men and women.
The project, due to take place between February 2007 and March 2012, will enable bosses to revamp the site as services are moved to the new diagnostic and treatment centre in Fossetts Farm.
