Castle Point council meetings have been suspended for three days as a mark of respect for former mayor Chris Freeman who has died following a heart attack.

Tory council leader Pam Challis made the decision as tributes flowed for Mr Freeman, 54, of May Avenue, Canvey.

Mr Freeman, councillor for Boyce ward, collapsed at Sainsbury's at Rayleigh Weir just after 1pm on Sunday. He died just before 11pm at Southend Hospital.

Mrs Challis said: "I was extremely shocked to hear the sad news that councillor Chris Freeman died suddenly on Sunday at the age of 54.

"We were all aware that Mr Freeman was waiting for hospital treatment and on behalf of all members I have sent deepest sympathies to councillor Pam Freeman and her family.

"Chris was a hard working councillor who will be sorely missed and our thoughts are with Pam at this tragic time."

Mayor Wendy Goodwin added: "I am deeply shocked and saddened by the news. Chris Freeman and I have been fellow councillors for over 17 years, for the past five years, we have both represented Boyce ward and have worked together on many issues.

"He was an excellent mayor and made many friends within the local community and was a fine ambassador for Castle Point outside the borough. At this tragic time our thoughts are with his wife and family."

Former Labour councillor Bill Scott said: "I can't believe it. I am absolutely devastated. Even though he was a member of the opposition he was a brilliant guy and I considered him a very good friend and colleague."

Last night's central services committee, of which Mr Freeman was vice-chairman was cancelled.
