Attackers slashed a man across the chest as they beat him up in a Colchester street.
Two men punched and kicked their victim in North Hill and he got home to find blood coming from a wound, possibly caused by a knife.
Det Sgt Roger Napier, of Colchester CID, said the man went to hospital for treatment to the injury.
Anyone with information about the attack, between 2.30am and 3am on Saturday, should call police on 01206 762212.
