A councillor today called for a ban on heavy lorries in key areas of Leigh affected by a cliffs slippage which has damaged walls and pavements.

Dr Alan Crystall also believes action is needed to repair the cliffs between Leigh Hill, Cliff Parade and Grand Parade, to ensure there are no further slips.

Southend Council has posted a sign at the site saying it is not "financially viable" to repair the cliffs in the area following repeated ground movement.

Lib Dem Dr Crystall, who lives along Cliff Parade himself, said: "The weight and the vibration from the very heavy lorries using the road is one of the causes of the problems with the land.

"That area was piled about 15 to 20 years ago but the piles are too far apart and the land between them has moved out.

"The pavement is moving and it is essential more work is done on the cliffs in the long term otherwise they will move again."

However, Southend Council's executive councillor for transportation and engineering Brian Kelly says no urgent work is needed.
