Two teenage boys are fighting for their lives after a head-on crash into a concrete pillar on the A13 destroyed the front of their BMW.

The driver - who had borrowed his mum's powerful 320i- and his friend had been on a night out and were travelling home when the car crashed near North Stifford at about 2.30am on Saturday.

As the car left the road it mounted a crash barrier and hit the concrete support of a footbridge, leaving the boys trapped. They were cut free by firecrews.

An Essex Ambulance spokesman said: "The 17-year-old driver suffered serious facial and chest injuries and was having difficulty breathing, he also had a possible fractured left leg and knee. The 16-year-old passenger had a fractured leg."

Both boys are from Plaistow and are in Darenth Valley Hospital, Dartford, in a critical condition.
