A dangerous chip pan fire in a family home has prompted firefighters in Basildon to hammer home the basics of safe cooking.

Fire crews from Basildon tackled a fire which left a house in Hollands Walk smoke logged and with fire damage to its kitchen on Friday night.

Station officer Tony Clark said although no one was hurt in the blaze and the people living in the home had done everything right, the dangers of chip pan fires were still very real.

He said: "Chip pan fires are dangerous and everything should be done to avoid them.

"People should use proper cookers and not just a pan filled with oil."
