A youngster had a " lucky" escape from serious injury when the brake handles of his bike pierced his thigh.

Paramedics said that the 13-year-old from Grays was lucky to have missed all the arteries in his leg.

The teenager was riding down a steep slope in the wooded area of Rookery Lane when he came off.

An ambulance from Thurrock arrived within minutes to discover that the brake handle had dug into his right thigh, two inches deep. Paramedic Mark Weston said: "It was a nasty injury and the lad lost a lot of blood."
