Detectives hunting an armed gang which raided a security van today feared the robbers could strike again.

They believe the gun-toting thieves planned the attack for weeks and today urged the public to help them catch the gang.

They appealed to the public to report anyone they saw acting suspiciously near the Sainsbury's superstore at Rayleigh Weir as a specialist team of detectives was put together to co-ordinate the hunt.

Acting Det Chief Insp John Kreyling, who is leading the investigation, said: "There is no doubt this robbery was committed by a determined gang.

"The level of force used by the robbers towards the security guard leads me to believe that they may well strike again. It's crucial that these men are identified and arrested as soon as possible.

Three armed raiders stole cash from the security van at 9.37am on Friday, shortly after it arrived at the store in Stadium Way, making a coin delivery to Sainsbury's.

Information can be reported to Mr Kreyling on 01268 775533.
