Police are putting the brakes on boy racers and other reckless drivers in a new operation.
Since the beginning of the month, police have been sending extra officers on Fridays and Saturdays to the A13 and A127 in an operation co-ordinated by Rayleigh traffic unit.
The operation is aimed at reducing the number of collisions by targeting dangerous drivers. Last week five drivers were arrested, including two for drink driving.
There was a similar operation last year which ran for a short period of time. This crackdown is expected to go on indefinitely.
Sgt Justin Smith, of Rayleigh traffic unit, said: "Last year we put an awful lot of resources in it. It was a short sharp shock.
"But it wasn't a long-lasting affair. New people came along and didn't know what we had done before.
"This will be for a long period of time."
