Craig Fagan's brace sent Colchester United storming to a convincing victory over Championship opponents Watford.

The Hornets may be one step further up the Football League ladder than the U's but this match at Layer Road certainly left you questioning that status.

And it's the fact that - on paper at least - Watford should have beaten Colchester which raises questions.

Fagan's first goal was pure instinct.

He was in the right place to score when former U's hero Alec Chamberlain spilled Sam Stockley's powerful long-range effort on 19 minutes.

The second, from the penalty spot, was deserved just minutes later as the U's refused to rest on their laurels and battered the Watford defence.

Joe Keith's pass was stopped by the hand of Paul Mayon and Fagan's spot-kick was calmly slotted home for a 2-0 lead.

Watford may have managed to sneak one goal past goalkeeper Dean Gerken, who was standing-in as Aidan Davison was suffering from a calf problem, but that came after a slip-up by former Hornet Wayne Brown.

He let in Danny Webber to score from a tight angle.
