Having been beaten off the last ball the previous week, Westcliff were delighted to win in similar circumstances at Chalkwell Park on Saturday.

The victory means that John Pratt's men are now probably just one win away from confirming their place in the Premier for next season.

They stand sixth in the table with 124 points and could well gain a triumph next weekend against second from bottom Shenfield.

Not that this latest success over bottom club Fives and Heronians was easy. Having lost the toss and been put in to bat, Westcliff piled on the agony for their basement visitors when they scored 297-6 in 59 overs before declaring.

John Edwards scored 84 and Tim Wade 77, joining in a fine third wicket partnership of 120. With wicket-keeper Ben Keith wading in with a late unbeaten 31, Westcliff looked in fine shape when their opponents took the crease for the start of their 61 over reply.

But they went for the runs throughout, thanks largely to the efforts of opener Gary Edwards -- it was a good day for players with that surname.

He carried his bat for 96 and Fives were eventually left needing three runs to win off the last ball.

In their precarious state at the bottom they badly needed the win, but a good throw from the outfield ensured that their last wicket fell to a close run out going for the second and Westcliff were home to a much-needed 22-point haul.
