A Braintree man has died while on holiday in the Lake District.

It is believed Raymond Didcock, 46, of Appletree Walk, died after getting into difficulties while swimming in Ullswater, near Pooley Bridge.

A spokesman for Cumbria Police said it is thought Mr Didcock was holidaying with family members in the area at the time of his death.

The police spokesman said the alarm was raised at about 3.35pm on Thursday when a man got into difficulties while swimming in Ullswater.

He said: "A search was undertaken involving police, a mountain rescue team searching the foreshore, and police rescue boats.

"A little bit later on, the body of a man was recovered."

A spokesman for the Cumbria coroner said an inquest into Mr Didcock's death was opened and adjourned in Carlisle on Friday for identification purposes.
