A Leigh family has shown the way to fundraisers hearts is via their stomachs.

Devoted - Matthew and Daisy Picture: MIKE MINERS

Matthew and Georgina Locker, of Leighfields Avenue, organised an eight-course gourmet meal to raise money for cancer support as a thankyou for their daughter Daisy's treatment for a brain tumour.

Mr Locker, who is the chef and proprietor of the Paris restaurant in London Road, Westcliff, slaved away in the kitchen while Daisy greeted guests arriving for the sumptuous meal.

Shortly after her second birthday, in May 2003, the Locker family were horrified when Daisy was diagnosed with the tumour.

A harrowing wait followed while she was treated at Southend Hospital and later London's Great Ormond Street Hospital before a scan in July 2003 confirmed she was clear of the disease.

To thank both hospitals, the Lockers set up the Amazing Daisy Charity Fund.

Matthew said: "I have the tools to raise some more money and that's why we staged the Grand Gourmet Extravaganza."

With other contributions, the evening raised another £1,875 to be added to the nearly £50,000 already waiting to be split between Southend's Neptune Ward and Great Ormond Street.
