Two people were taken to hospital after a five-car pile-up in Kelvedon, which shut the main road through the village for over an hour.
The accident happened in High Street, Kelvedon, in the Colchester direction, at about 11.45am yesterday.
Vehicles caught up in the accident included two red Ford Escort cars and a Land-Rover.
Three ambulances and a paramedic manager arrived on the scene.
Operations manager Trevor Redburn said: "The worst injuries were to a 20-year-old man, who had injuries to his head and abdomen, and a 37-year-old woman, who had whiplash and minor facial injuries.
"They were taken to Colchester General Hospital but were not thought to be seriously hurt."
