A thousand blue and white balloons will be released on Saturday to celebrate 20 years of caring at Saint Francis Hospice.

The helium filled "tribute" balloons will mark the conclusion of two days of special events to commemorate the hospice's big birthday.

Hundreds of hospice supporters are expected to launch balloons in memory of a loved one, raising thousands of pounds for the charity. Dedications will be logged in a memory book.

Valerie Fletcher, fundraising manager of the Havering-atte-Bower hospice, said: "As well as marking our 20th birthday, this symbolic launch will also be a tribute in memory of lives past.

"People can come and watch their balloons float away out of sight and capture a lasting and special moment."

The balloon release is just one of a series of special events planned for Friday and Saturday in a marquee on the Havering-atte-Bower village green.

The hospice relies on fundraising and donations for more than 65 per cent of its income and there will be a thank you evening on Friday at 7pm for all the hundreds of volunteers who keep the hospice going.
