Mobile phone giant O2 could put up transmitters at the home of Colchester United.
The U's have given the firm permission to check whether their Layer Road ground would be suitable to house a new mobile radio base station, needed to improve coverage for customers.
The move would generate several thousand pounds annually in rent with advance lump-sum payments available, if team boss Phil Parkinson wanted a one-off cash injection for his transfer fund.
But mobile phone mast proposals have proved controversial in the past few years.
Some research has claimed that the radiation they emit can increase the risk that people living nearby will develop cancer.
And the U's Julie Ager said the club would have to carefully consider whether to accept if O2 made a formal request.
She said: "At the moment all they have done is knock on the door and ask if they can inspect the area.
"I said yes, but that doesn't mean we will agree to it."
