The months of waiting are over for Brentwood residents after the county's highways chief, Cllr Rodney Bass, finally announced on Tuesday his decision on the future of the High Street.

The £4m scheme should get underway in early 2006 and as expected pedestrianisation is not on the agenda - although some of the other proposals still on the table are likely to spark controversy.

Cllr Bass, cabinet member for Highways and Transportation, confirmed: "The scheme will not involve the closure, either part time or full time, of the High Street to through traffic. This accords with the wishes of Brentwood Council and the majority of residents following the public consultations undertaken earlier this year."

Cllr Bass said full details of the scheme would emerge during the full design process which has now got underway. However, he highlighted seven key elements of the scheme.

These were:

A redesign of the street scene

A new Kings Road to High Street link road (in the vicinity of Bennetts)

An enlarged roundabout at the Ongar Road and William Hunter Way junction

Additional and upgraded walkways between the High Street and William Hunter Way

Changes to William Hunter Way's traffic calming and pedestrian crossings

A new mini-roundabout at the Weald RoadWestern Road junction

Traffic calming on some local roads

There will be no changes to the Wilson's Corner junction, but further consideration will be given to reducing queues on Ongar Road between William Hunter Way and the High Street plus cutting congestion around the William Hunter Way car parks.
