A woman was at the centre of a dramatic rescue operation yesterday after she became struck in river mud off south Essex.
The 38-year-old, believed to be from Latvia, was up to her knees in a muddy Thames bank about 30 metres from the shore.
She was discovered by friends at about 7am yesterday near the old west Thurrock power station off Stoneness Road, West Thurrock.
They alerted the emergency services and waited with her until firefighters arrived.
Three crews, from Grays and Orsett, carried their equipment, including inflated pathways, along a narrow and overgrown path to get to her.
Once freed, the woman was taken to hospital by ambulance.
