Residents may look forward to receiving their mail on time with a recent management change at the embattled Benfleet sorting office.

The sorting office had been the target of much criticism in recent months, following the implementation of a single-service delivery system.

Residents in the borough had complained they were not receiving post from one week to the next or that mail was continually late.

Castle Point MP Bob Spink said he had witnessed noticeable improvements in the local mail service but added it did not spell the end of the problems for residents.

But he felt the management change would see the service finally getting back on the right track.

Mr Spink visited the sorting office to see the recent improvements for himself.

He said: "We all know how the Royal Mail has had great difficulties for a number of months but we are now seeing real and sustainable improvements."

A Royal Mail spokesman said: "We can confirm we have a new delivery office manager. However, he is not new to the business and has been transferred from another office. This is not significant to any other changes; this happens from time to time."
