As a mother of two, Jane Naylor-Jones feared for her children when she read reports of abductions, attacks and murders.

But instead of worrying, she decided to help them protect themselves - by setting up a children's karate class. The Shotokan Tigers have been practising at St Margaret's School in Pitsea for the last year.
Mrs Naylor-Jones, a former member of the England karate team, said: "Karate has many benefits for children. Not only is it a great exercise, it also builds self confidence and self esteem and teaches children self defence.
"I am hoping they will be competing in their first tournament at Chelmsford in October."
