Diggers have swung into action on the site of the new Harwich Hospital.
Contractors have brought in heavy equipment to demolish the nurses' homes and have been stripping the site in preparation for work to begin.
Paul Unsworth, Tendring Primary Care Trust chief executive, said: "After many months of discussion and planning, it is good to see the work finally start."
The development of the new hospital is part of the first wave of improvements in north-east Essex to be carried out and financed under the NHS Lift (Local Improvement Finance Trust) initiative.
Mr Unsworth added: "I hope the people of Harwich can now look forward to the town being provided with 21st century healthcare facilities."
