The threat of a contamination leak in the Thames Estuary continues to hang over Two Tree Island, Leigh, after it emerged repairs to damaged sea defences will not be carried out until next year.
Leigh councillor Peter Wexham said the work was due to be done this month but could not go ahead because of an administrative error at Castle Point Council, which had failed to advertise it properly.
It required permission from both authorities because repairs are needed on both the southern and north-eastern sections.
A spokesman for Castle Point Council said he believed it had acted within its guidelines.
A spokeswoman for Southend Council admitted the work had been delayed. He added: "As far as we are concerned, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs has confirmed the funding will be in place to carry out the work once the procedures have been completed. We hope to start the work in April."
