The 59th Southend Ladies Bowls Tournament got underway at Priory Park yesterday with the Hough family repeating their 2002 triumph in the two-wood triples.
Roll over - another wood is sent towards its target
Mum Win and twin daughters Pat and Jean, representing May and Baker, pulled off an 11-6 win in the final of a competition that has traditionally become the social opening of the tournament before the more serious events get underway
The Hough family's final success was over the Shell line-up of J Bonnett, S Walpole and J Hughes.
In the play-off for third place the Fairways team of Jean Noakes, Margaret Chedderton and skip Shirley Cohen proved too strong for the home Prittlewell trio of Doreen Wildsmith, Margaret Binyon and June Millership. The winners got home 11-5.
In the competition teams play three games of seven ends in a triples sponsored by HSBC.
The tournament was opened by the mayor of Southend, Roger Weaver, and mayoress wife Verina, and lasts until Saturday week.
After a rest day today due to the staging of the Essex County ladies' finals at Priory Park, the tournament resumes tomorrow with the ladies pairs being played up to and including Sunday.
