Canvey coach Glenn Pennyfather admitted that the club were delighted to have captured the services of an experienced Football League player as they approach their first season at Nationwide Conference level.

New man at Park Lane is Matt Joseph, who left Leyton Orient at the end of last season after making more than 250 first team appearances.

The 32-year-old had been at Brisbane Road for six years following his £20,000 transfer from Cambridge United. He'd been with Arsenal and Gillingham earlier in his career.

Gulls had given Joseph, who can play as an orthodox right-sided defender or wing-back, a low key introduction to the club in friendly games with Hull City and Halstead.

Pennyfather said: "We wanted to make sure that we didn't start alerting too many other clubs to Matt's availability.

"At this time of year it can become difficult when so many clubs are looking for talented players. When someone of Matt's experience and skill becomes available you have to try and play it down a bit.

"That's why I kept it low-key when we fielded him in our first couple of games."
