Southend United striker Michael Husbands is hoping to continue his fine pre-season form for the Shrimpers against Millwall at Roots Hall tonight.

The speedy 20-year-old has impressed in victories over both East Thurrock United and Canvey Island and is now bidding for more of the same in this evening's tussle with the Lions.

"I've been very pleased with how things have gone for me so far," said the former Aston Villa trainee.

"I've been fully fit for the past two months now and that has obviously made a big difference."

Husbands, who was told he could depart Roots Hall on a free transfer at the end of the previous campaign, also insisted he was always confident of rediscovering his best form despite the snub.

"I've never doubted my ability," he said. "I know I can beat people for pace and now I've been given more of a chance I've been able to show people that.

"I need to keep that going though and try I stay in the team because I want to play football for Southend."

The youngster has also reverted to the right wing in the recent friendlies and is enjoying that role.

"I've played there in the past for Villa and it gives me more space to use my pace," he said.

"Fingers crossed I'll be involved tonight and, although it will be a very hard game, I think we will do well as we have all gelled together already."
