Colchester today got a major boost as it was revealed a new Essex County Council customer contact centre is to be set up in the town.
The new centre will bring up to 100 jobs and will be based at The Cresent on Colchester Business Park.
Kevin Bentley, asset portfolio holder at Colchester Council, said: "I am absolutely thrilled by this news.
"It is a good thing for Colchester, good news for jobs and with the greener transport elements of the project, this is good news for traffic management, the environment and the county as a whole."
The contact centre will bring together an expert team capable of taking telephone calls from the public relating to all areas of the county council's services.
It will account for a quarter of the space in the building, with the rest being used to accommodate general council staff.
There will also be a number of "hotdesks" to allow people who normally work in other parts of the county to use the site and save on unnecessary travel.
The project will be launched later this year with the contact centre going live in spring 2005.
