A 43-year-old father pleaded guilty to obstructing police officers after they went to his home to arrest his son.

Kevin Treffers, of Leicester Road, Tilbury, appeared before Basildon magistrates following the incident in January.

The court heard how seven officers entered his property at 2am to arrest his 19-year-old son, who was wanted for a criminal damage matter.

Treffers came downstairs and positioned himself between officers and the teenager, so they could not arrest him.

This led to a scuffle during which Treffers and his son were arrested.

Defence solicitor Stan Reiz argued his client, who had been awoken by the commotion, had just returned from his brother's funeral in Portugal and was still grieving.

He said: "He is not a man who commits offences and this is his first conviction since 1985.

"He is 43 years old and of good character so I would urge you to deal with him by way of a conditional discharge."

Magistrates accepted his defence sentencing him to a 12-month conditional discharge.

He was also ordered to paypay £100 court costs.
