Passenger trains will continue even if a new container terminal is built, a rail expert has said.
Nick Banks, of the Strategic Rail Authority, spoke yesterday at a public inquiry into the £300m Bathside Bay development.
He responded to growing concerns that trains on the Mayflower Line will only be used for freight.
"There will still be a passenger service from Harwich to Manningtree," he said.
"But it will be a direct service to London rather than just a shuttle service.
"It runs as part of the franchise until such time as it is changed."
James Lough, also of the rail authority, said: "There is sufficient capacity on the Harwich line for all foreseeable scenarios."
Both men were cross-examined by representatives from the Highways Agency, Harwich Fisheries Association and the port developers, Hutchison Ports UK.
The inquiry continued today
