Southend United striker Wayne Gray was full of smiles after netting the winner for the Shrimpers in last night's 2-1 victory over south Essex rivals Canvey Island at Roots Hall.

The pacey forward coolly converted Duncan Jupp's 52nd minute pass to hand Steve Tilson's new look side another pre-season win after a Kevin Maher spot kick had cancelled out an earlier penalty from Gulls front-runner Lee Boylan.

"I enjoyed it and it was great to get another goal," said Gray, who also bagged a brace against East Thurrock on Saturday.

"I'd like to think I can do a job for the team and I'll be working as hard as I can to continue getting goals."

Having seen the Seasiders complete their second successive triumph, Gray is backing the Blues to enjoy a successful season

"Southend is a fun place to be right now and the gaffer has made some good signings," said the 23-year-old.

"Things are looking quite promising -- we have a good squad and we're looking for a spot in the play offs at least."
