Andre Adams, a 29-year-old New Zealand allrounder, has been signed by Essex as a replacement for Pakistan legspinner Danish Kaneria.

The Kiwi, a medium paceman and late order batsman, put pen to paper on Saturday and was immediately included in the side that played Lancashire in yesterday's Totesport League game at Old Trafford where he scored 11 runs and took one wicket.

Adams, who has one Test cap to his credit but has played in 33 one-day internationals for his country, had been turning out for Colne in the Lancashire League.

Essex acted quickly to secure his services after missing out on Australian Paul Rofe, who is to join Northamptonshire, and on learning that Andy Clarke is the latest paceman to join the casualty list.
