Drivers who flout the car park charges at country parks in Essex could face the threat of legal action...even if they are raising money for charity.

Essex County Council has warned that anyone visiting a county council run country park will be taken to court if they do not buy and display a parking ticket on their vehicle.

The policy of county hall has been clarified after people who attended a recent charity event at Weald Country Park found warning notices had been slapped on their vehicles.

Some motorists were angry that the charges should apply for the Royal National Institute of the Blind aerial slide fundraiser and threw away their 'penalty notices' in disgust.

An ECC spokesman said: 'People have had tickets put on their vehicles warning them they need a parking ticket and their registration numbers have been noted. There is no penalty charge as such but the county council will take people who do not pay through the courts to recover the cost of the tickets and we will apply for legal costs.

'We have not taken anyone to court yet but that is what will happen if people flout the parking charge system.'
