A new course for nurses is being launched at Broomfield Hospital in a bid to help ease the shortage of renal nurses in the mid Essex area.

A six-month course for 10 nurses will be held at the hospital under the auspices of the University of Essex. The course, which starts in September, is already attracted interest from nurses across Essex.

Christine Grinstead, nurse manager for renal services at Mid Essex Hospitals Trust, said until now local nurses had been offered places on courses in Hertfordshire, Cambridge and London, but found the combination of work, study and travel was too demanding.

Christine said, "Amanda Armstrong, who has an education background, will be leading the course from here. She has tailored the course to suit our individual needs.

She got in touch with various colleges to see what they could provide us and the University of Essex was chosen.

"It is mainly for specialised renal nurses but other nurses will be able to dip in and out of the course.

"We really need this course because there is a massive shortage of trained renal nurses."
