Police are searching for the man who carried out a terrifying sexual assault on a 49-year-old woman.

The attack took place between 1am and 2.30am on Saturday as the victim was sitting in a shelter at the seafront end of Edith Road, Clacton.

She was dragged down a sloping path to the promenade where she was assaulted next to a cafe kiosk.

Investigating officer Det Insp Godfrey O'Toole said: "Although there are no obvious outward signs of an attack the woman has clearly been through a horrendous trauma.

"The woman, who is particularly vulnerable, is currently being supported by police liaison officers and is recovering from her ordeal."

The man first approached his victim in a brief conversation when he told her he worked in a nearby nightclub.

He spoke in broken English and claimed to be Italian.

The man is described as Mediterranean-looking, in his late teens or early 20s and of slim build.

He was clean-shaven, about 6ft tall with short black hair.

At the time of the attack he wore a red, short-sleeved shirt and black trousers and also had gold chains around his neck.

Anyone with information should contact Clacton police on 01255 221312 or call Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
