Coastguards were called to help when a 25foot long motor boat ran out of fuel and the crew was unsure of its position.
The boat, called the Lady Emma, had two people on board.
After help taking direction finding bearings on the radio it was discovered the boat was five miles to the south of Clacton.
The Clacton RNLI inshore lifeboat and Walton RNLI all-weather lifeboat were launched to help.
The boat was towed to safety into Titchmarsh Marina, Walton.
