A company buying up prime Canvey seafront land has insisted no plans for flats are included in their proposals to rejuvenate the island.
Derek and Suzanne Gray, of Monico Leisure, want to plough hundreds of thousands of pounds into the seafront area to boost leisure and tourism.
The couple have asked Castle Point Council if they can buy the land on which their properties stand, including Carousel Amusements, Fantasy Island Amusements, Kiddies Corner and Krazy Golf.
They say the news has prompted many people to fear they want the land for property development.
Mrs Gray said: "There is no way that Monico Leisure would ever consider the thought of flats in this area.
"We are ready to invest more into the seafront, but not on leased land. It would be a foolish business decision to invest hundreds of thousands of pounds on leisure facilities on land which at present does not belong to Monico and belongs to the council."
