The crash in Barrow Hall Road near Little Wakering - which is the 14th fatal involving a motorbike this year - happened at noon yesterday.

The 16-year-old was on a small Honda bike with a 22-year-old, also from Shoebury. Police are not sure who was the rider and who was the pillion passenger.

A Ford Fusion, travelling towards Southend, was struck by the bike which had been travelling along a private road at right angles to that road.

An ambulance from Shoebury arrived at the scene five minutes after the alarm was raised and a rapid response vehicle arrived a minute later. The boy was pronounced dead at the scene.

Essex Air Ambulance was called in but because the rider was so agitated it was decided to take him to Southend Hospital by road. He fractured his arm and legs and is in intensive care in a serious but stable condition.

The motorist, a 37-year-old woman from Barling, was treated at the scene for cuts. Traffic police closed off the road for several hours as investigators examined the crash site.

Witnesses are urged to call Rayleigh Road Policing Unit on 01268 775533.
