The family of a 20-year old man killed in a road accident have paid tribute to him, saying they have been "overwhelmed by the number of people who loved our boy".
Robert Warner, from Butts Green Road in Sandon, died after his car hit a group of trees and came to rest on its roof at about 1am on Saturday.
Two police officers on patrol had seen his black Volkswagen Golf driving through Maldon but when they turned round to do a routine stop check he drove off out of sight.
The same officers later came across his vehicle after the crash in Captains Wood Road, Great Totham.
In a statement Mr Warner's family said: "Rob will be sadly missed by many people following his tragic death.
"We have been overwhelmed by the number of people, many of whom we did not know, who loved our boy. We loved our son and were so very proud of him."
