Southend Athletic Club and Greensward College athlete James McLean is having an excellent track season.
He has continued to break records under the watchful eye of his coach, Peter Winch, at the Southend club, who train at the Garon Park track.
At the beginning of the season he already topped the all-time list for under-13s boys 75m hurdles, having smashed a record that had stood for 23 years.
His hurdling feats this year have helped him to be the Essex Schools' champion, the English Schools Cup junior hurdles record holder, national sports hall triple jump champion and, more recently, the English Schools' junior silver medalist.
He only lost this latest race, at Gateshead International Stadium, by the narrowest of margins, one hundredth of a second, to an athlete a year older than himself.
McLean is now ranked second in the country this season against older athletes and is the fastest hurdler for his age, year eight, at school.
