A campaign to keep a Braintree maternity unit open 24 hours a day has had an unexpected boost.
Witham, Braintree and Halstead Care Trust said 22 babies were born at William Julien Courtauld (WJC) Hospital, Braintree, last month.
The unit has been the focus of fervent campaign by the Braintree Mothers Support Group, which is demanding it should be open around the clock and not just normal daytime hours.
But hospital bosses at the trust, which runs the unit, and Mid-Essex Hospital services NHS Trust, which supplies the midwives, have said birth numbers at the hospital need to rise if the battle to have a fully operational unit is to be won.
